Simple Awareness Exercise

This is an exercise that will help you instantly calm the noise, thoughts, feelings and emotions and help you connect with the calm and joyful inner space inside all of us.

You don’t need to do any preparation or even take any particular posture. You can do this sitting, standing or lying down.

Ask your yourself the question, am I aware?

Give it a few seconds and then answer. Hint, it’s more than likely going to be yes!

Try and notice the gap between the question and the answer. Notice how it feels.

Try not to think about it, rather feel.

That is your awareness or consciousness.

The essence of who you are.

That’s it! Simple! Recognise how lovely that space is. How calm, joyful and serene

This works because it’s immediately connecting to your intuition.

We tend to define ourselves by a sentence that starts with I am..like, “I am Hugh”, “I am tired”, I” am happy”, “I am amazing”, “I am an idiot”...the only constant there is “I am”. Every other part of the sentence is temporary or a construct and therefore cannot be the essence of you. Who or what is the “I am”?

Whenever you get a chance explore this. You’ll find you can stay with it for longer and longer periods. You’ll find it’s nothing but calm, joyful and infinite, i.e. it’s always there at your core, never changing.

That’s a very powerful realisation as it means that nothing can change it and you can always come back to it. It’s the same now as when you were a child. You’ll also notice that EVERYTHING else comes and goes. Thoughts, feelings, sensations, the world etc...even every cell in your body.

When you get deeper into this you can start to ask questions like, where is my awareness, what does it feel like, what is there that isn’t in my awareness (or has the potential to be)?

You’ll realise that everything is in your awareness or consciousness and that consciousness is universal (all our consciousnesses are essentially the same).

We are all just instances of the same consciousness whose nature is infinite joy and calm, i.e, happiness.

Any differences between us are just temporary artificial layers that can be peeled away. We’re all looking to reconnect with that joy.

This is the simple essence of meditation.

It doesn’t need to be a formal practice but doing one does help quieten the noise to help you reconnect.

This was a simple exercise that hopefully helped you recognise the incredibly beautiful anchor that always exists within you, even if just for a fleeting moment.

Keep doing this whenever you remember, when you’re sitting watching tv, doing the washing up, having a shower, going for a walk.

The more you do this the more constantly you’ll be able to connect to this space and take back control of your thoughts and with them your feelings and emotions.

I hope this has helped you.
