How to get out of a hole:
Stop digging!
What Got You Here Won’t Get You There
There’s a story I often come back to — one I’ve lived myself and seen play out with so many of my clients.
It goes like this:
You work hard. Head down. Focused. You push through. You build a version of success brick by brick, powered by grit, determination, and sheer bloody-mindedness.
And it works.
Until it doesn’t.
You hit a wall. Or a plateau.
6Or worse, you wake up one day and realise you’re standing in a hole of your own making — exhausted, uninspired, wondering why all the strategies that used to work feel... empty.
You realised that you've lost your sense of direction.
That’s the moment we have a choice.
You can keep digging, trying to hustle your way out — piling on more of the same.
Or you can do something far braver.
You can put down the shovel.
Because the mindset, habits, and identity that got you to this point — they’re not the tools that will take you forward.
The Courage to Let Go
This is the uncomfortable truth about growth: it requires you to release parts of yourself you once relied on.
🌟 The workaholic identity that earned you praise.
🌟 The need to say yes to everything, just to feel worthy.
🌟 The belief that rest equals laziness.
These things may have got you here — but they will not get you there.
What this doesn’t take into account is that no two situations are ever the same.
"The only permanence is impermanence." As the Buddhists say.
What would happen if you removed "ego" from all your decisions and instead focused on what brings you joy, hunger, passion, connects you to FLOW?
Where you’re going next requires space, stillness, curiosity. It asks you to put down the shovel and maybe, for a moment, just sit in the hole. Look around. Feel the discomfort. Ask yourself:
🔹 What if I didn’t try to fix this right now?
🔹 What if I trusted that clarity comes in the pause?
🔹 What if there’s a ladder just out of view — but I’m too busy digging to see it?
Are You Ready to Stop Digging?
A coach can open up that process for you. Supercharged guided reflections that give you focus and massively speed up your journey.
This week, I’d love to invite you to do something bold:
Let go of one habit, belief, or story that’s keeping you stuck.
Even if it worked once. Especially if it worked once.
Because where you’re going next? It’s asking for a whole new version of you.
What’s one thing you’re ready to put down? Hit reply and share — I’d love to hear.
