Happiness vs Pleasure: What We’re Really Searching For
Happiness vs Pleasure: What We’re Really Searching For
If you could have all the success, wealth, and recognition in the world — but it left you unhappy — would you want it?
The Dalai Lama poses this question in The Art of Happiness.
And the answer is obvious. Of course not.
Because underneath all our striving, chasing, and achieving, there’s one thing we’re all really looking for: happiness.
The trouble is, most of us confuse happiness with pleasure.
Pleasure is fleeting. A great meal. A new deal. A like on your latest post.
Happiness is cultivated. A state of being you nurture and return to, regardless of circumstance.
The two aren’t the same. But in our busy lives, it’s easy to mix them up.
The 5-Minute Alignment Reset
Here’s a practice I use with clients — and in my own life — to come back to what matters:
1️⃣ Pause. Take 3 slow breaths.
2️⃣ Ask: Will this bring me happiness — or just pleasure?
3️⃣ Remember: happiness is a state you cultivate; pleasure is fleeting.
4️⃣ If it’s not aligned with happiness, what’s one tiny step you can take to shift?
That’s it. 5 minutes.
It sounds simple, but this question can change the entire direction of your day and as a result, your life!
It’s how we stop living on autopilot and start orienting towards what we actually want.
✨ Because at the end of the day, you don’t want more success if it costs you happiness.
💬 Reflection for you:
What’s one thing that genuinely makes you happy — not just gives you pleasure?
